Remarks by U.S. Ambassador James B. Cunningham on the
Re-election of President Barack Obama
Kabul – It gives me great pleasure to congratulate President Barack Obama on his re-election as President of the United States.
When he was elected four years ago, President Obama said “The true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.” The election results this morning demonstrate those ideals in action.
The American people have spoken, as they have in 56 previous Presidential elections. The votes have been counted, and the work of our nation will continue uninterrupted.
No matter what challenges we face as a nation, we do so with the knowledge that America’s voices have been heard and we will move forward with renewed dedication and energy.
And that will be the case in our relationship with Afghanistan. Americans have sacrificed much, and contributed much, in Afghanistan. President Obama is committed to our enduring partnership, our Strategic Partnership, with the people of Afghanistan.
He will lead the United States in developing that partnership in the coming years, and in helping Afghans with the hard work of building the better, more secure and more prosperous future its people want and deserve for themselves, and their children. As the President said, “as Afghanistan stands up, it will not stand alone.”
